515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 551174600
(651) 766 -4029 / FAX: (651) 766 -4048
www.ci.little-canadadnn.us
TO:
FROM:
DATE:
RE:
MEMORANDUM
Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
Bill Direks, Public Works Superintendent
April 3, 2014
Street Sweeper Operator Position
MAYOR
Bill Blesener
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
John Keis
Michael McGraw
Shelly Boss
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
Ron Kohn, the City's street sweeper operator for the past five years will not be able to
come back this year due to an illness. Ron did an excellent job for the City and we wish
him well.
The City advertised to fill the position and was able to find a qualified candidate. Charles
Johnson recently retired after working for 36 years for the City of Newport. While he
worked there he did the majority of the City's sweeping with an Elgin Pelican sweeper.
The Pelican is different from Little Canada's Crosswind but he understands sweeping in
traffic, safe operation, and the other idiosyncrasies that go along with sweeping city
streets.
The public works staff should be able to train him on using the Crosswind along with
showing him the extra care and maintenance that it needs.
The position is regular part -time. He will generally work for about two weeks in the
spring, another two -to -four weeks through the summer, and two -to three weeks in the fall
to sweep leaves. He will also be on -call if we need him for any special sweeping jobs.
Staff recommends hiring Charles Johnson to be the City's Street Sweeper Operator at the
rate of $20 per hour.
