Railroad Quiet Zone
Little Canada and Shoreview
Background and Summary
The Cities of Little Canada and Shoreview each received General Obligation Bond funding from the 2014
State Legislature (HF 2490, Section 16, Subd. 5, paragraphs (1) and (2)). The intent is for the Cities to
fund a railroad crossing quiet zone. Little Canada received $1,250,000 and Shoreview received
$500,000.
Little Canada has 6 public grade crossings and Shoreview has 2 public grade crossings that are not yet in
a quiet zone. The table 1 is a summary of the project. Tables 2 and 3 provide additional crossing level
proposed improvements within each City.
The Canadian Pacific Railroad (CP) will furnish, install and maintain the railroad signals with gates. The
existing warning devices within CP corridor in Little Canada and Shoreview contain 2 passive crossings; 2
railroad signals with gates that need circuitry upgrades and 4 flashing light only signals that will need to
be preplaced with railroad signals with gates. The Cities will also design and construct certain roadway
improvements to comply with Federal quiet zone rules.
Table 1
Project Summary
Little Canada
Shoreview
Comments
# of Crossings
6
2
# of Road Authorities
2
2
Ramsey County has a
roadway in each City
# of New RR Crossing
systems
1
1
# of replacement RR
signals
4
0
# of Upgraded RR
crossing systems
1
1
Estimated cost -
Railroad
$1,350,000
$350,000
Estimated cost -
Roadway
$90,000
$45,000
Engineering & Const
Management
$20,000
$10,000
Total Cost
$1,460,000
$405,000
Funding Sources
GO Bond Funds
$1,250,000
$500,000
City Funds
$210,000
$0
