For the past several months,
our block has had numerous issues with the tenants of the apartment building across the street.
These tenants have repeatedly parked their cars on our street at all hours of the day or night. They have also
engaged in very suspect behavior, by loitering on the street or sitting in their cars at extremely late hours of the
night. One night, after returning home from travel, I returned home to a Jeep with two men inside parked
outside of my house with the lights on. It proceeded to sit outside of my house for the better part of an hour.
Conscious for the safety of my family, I called the police, who told the men to move along. Since then, I have
seen that same Jeep on my street parked in different areas.
Because of this behavior, I have expressed my concerns to the other members of our neighborhood and am
encouraged because they also feel the same. Our block has always been one in which our residents feel safe in
daily life, comfortable with their neighbors and surroundings, and now, that feeling has evaporated completely.
The parking habits of the apartment tenants have also personally hampered my trash and mail utilities, as the
mailbox for our street has been blocked numerous times, and my trash has not been picked up by Waste
Management twice in the past month due to not being able to place the cans outside on the street as instructed
because of these cars.
Both my neighbors and I understand that parking on a public street is not illegal. However, the parking of the
apartment tenants has disrupted our social lives since our invited company does not have a place to park, our
utilities and it has greatly affected our feeling of general safety. I have also had a contractor refuse a job on my
house because there was nowhere convenient for his crew to park, which would not have been the case if these
cars that belong to apartment renters were not on our street.
When I politely addressed a man who lived in that building as he was parking his car outside of my house and
asked him to please park elsewhere because my trash services were being disrupted, I was rudely insulted and
simply told that he "would do whatever he damn well pleased". He also clarified that he did not have a parking
pass to park in his own building's lot, which strikes me as being very irresponsible and for lack of a better word,
cheap. This interaction also shows that these tenants are not amenable to compromise, even when presented
with the best intentions.
t
