MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
NOVEMBER 6, 2014
reported that there was the need to have adequate space at the entry door to
meet these requirements.
Vang asked if a dedication ceremony would be planned for the warming
house. The Director did not anticipate one, but indicated that there will be an
article in the City's newsletter announcing the warming house opening as
well as pictures of the new facility.
BROECHER The Director reported that the bench has been installed in Spooner Park
DONATION along the trail near the volleyball court that is part of the Leah Broecher
Estate donation. A plaque has been ordered and will be affixed to the bench
as soon as it is ready. Additionally, there will be trees added to the wooded
area at the west end of the park paid for from the donation. These trees were
not available this fall, and will be ordered and planted in the spring. Once
the improvements are complete, an article will be included in the City
newsletter acknowledging and thanking the Broecher Estate for the donation
to Spooner Park.
VETERANS The Director reported that the dedication ceremony for Veterans Memorial
MEMORIAL Park is scheduled for Tuesday, November 11111, Veterans Day, at 3:00 p.m.
PARK Various Commissioners expressed their appreciation for how well the
Memorial is coming along. Miller asked if the Boy Scout who installed the
picnic area would be invited to the dedication. The Director indicated that he
would be recognized in the dedication program. The Parks Consultant
pointed out that it is not too late to purchase memorial blocks for the
Memorial.
COMMISSION The Director noted that the terms of office for Patti Sullivan and Dave
VACANCIES Miller expire December 31, 2014. He encouraged them to apply for
reappointment and noted that the deadline is December 1, 2014.
REGISTRATION The Director reviewed the winter registration flyer for basketball and
REPORT gymnastics. Miller asked how many basketball teams were formed. The
Director replied that there were adequate registrations for two boys' teams.
There were some age groups where interest was expressed, but the numbers
were not adequate to form a Little Canada team. Arrangements were made
with the City of Maplewood to incorporate those children into their program.
LCRA
The Director reported that the Little Canada Recreation Association (LCRA)
will be taking the City's volleyball teams and their coaches to a MN Gophers
volleyball game next week.
