MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
MAY27,2015
used. Torkelson indicated that Facebook can be used as a method of
reaching out to residents.
Fischer indicated that he is supportive of this idea, but felt that the site had
to be kept fresh and updated. Fischer indicated that it would be important
to have staff assigned to this duty. Keis stated that he was not sure who
from staff would be assigned to this duty, and agreed that the Facebook
account would have to be maintained in an appropriate manner.
Torkelson noted that with succession planning of some key staff members,
this could be taken into account. Torkelson agreed with the City
Administrator's recommendation that a workshop meeting should be held
to discuss the issue of social media. He also noted that there are filters
that can be used that prevent inappropriate content from being posted on
the account. Torkelson stated that between now and the workshop
meeting he would like to continue with the Facebook account. After the
workshop if a decision is made to keep the account, Torkelson indicated
that decisions could be made on issues of control and ownership. Montour
indicated that if the City keeps the Facebook account, social media
policies will have to be developed.
Keis indicated that he was not sure whether there was support by the
majority of the Council for a City Facebook account.
The City Administrator pointed out that there are a couple of staff
members that work jointly in maintaining the City's web page. He
suggested that these staff members participate in the workshop meeting.
The Council's consensus was that the Facebook page should be
unpublished until the outcome of the workshop meeting. The
Administrator suggested that the agenda for the workshop meeting include
a general information update in addition to the Facebook discussion.
Keis introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION NO. 2015-5-106 — CALLING A WORKSHOP
MEETING FOR WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 2015 AT 6:00 P.M. TO
DISCUSS A CITY FACEBOOK PAGE AS WELL AS GENERAL
INFORMATIONAL UPDATE
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Montour.
Ayes (5).
Nays (0). Resolution declared adopted.
11
