MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
November 1, 2007
_CATEBOAItll Mans asked the Director about the progress with the St. Paul Water Department. The Director
PARK reporCed that the City will be working on a rider that needs to be approved by the St. Paul Water
Department to allow the installation of the concrete base for the skateboard park The Director
estimated this would be applied for in the next few weeks once Sanders completes the
specifications for the concrete. He is currently consulting with concrete engineers. A major
concern is the impacf of the large equipment on the water main in the area.
Mans asked if there would be any major grading needed for the construction of the park. The
Director replied that removal of some of the existing soil would be necessary for the sub-base.
The base now consists of sand and he estimated about a foot of gravel will be added to the sand
base.
Neis asked if they should name the park. She suggested having a contest to acquire a name. It
was noted that the hockey rink does not have a name. The consensus was that if a name was
given to it, the Little Canada Recreation Association should be considered due to their financing
of the proj eet.
Mans inquired about the timing for having a neighborhood meeting. Neis inquired about the
notice to the neighborhood. 'the Director stated all the property owners within 350 feet of the
projected park location would be sent a letter about the meeting. Mans suggested informing the
schools of the meeting as that it could provide some input from the skateboard park users. The
Director commented that lie has already been in contact with Dr. John Nichols' son who wants
to assist with the planning of the park. It was also suggested to announce the meeting date and
time in the upcoming newsletter and post on the website. Neis asked if the neighborhood
meeting would be held in conjwrction with the regular monthly meeting night. Fahey had
concerns with the January meeting being so close to the New Year's holiday and recommended
the February 7 meeting date. 1/veryone was in agreement with holding the neighborhood
meeting on February 7, 2008. This would also allow the notice to be printed in the next two
issues of the city newsletter.
Neis asked what the lead time requirement would be to purchase the equipment. Mans asked if
they had the equipment on hand or if the equipment would be made to order. The Director will
inquire about the lead time and status of equipment. He projected that the concrete would be
poured in May or June.
TERMS Mans announced that the commissioner terms of Tony Mans, Kevin Steinert, and Ruth
OT OTrICE Steinwall will be expiring the end of this year. Tony Mans indicated that even though he has
thoroughly enjoyed serving on this board he is not going to seek another term as his life is now
very active with his children. He reminded Steinert and Steinwall that they will need to submit
a letter of intent to the City Council if they plan to reapply as a commissioner for another three
year term.
WINTER Mans stated he received an email about the Friday evening co-ed open volleyball activity. The
PROGRAM Director said the program was not offered last year because of poor attendance the previous
"CIVI1'IE5 year. He stated he had received some interest in having the program again and sent out an email
to inquire about any interest in the program. The program would run from the first I^riday in
January through the end of April, 2008. The program would require an attendance of twelve
Page 2 of 4
