MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
SEPTEMBER ER 26, 2012
Heiser also pointed out that people need access to the Internet to use any
of these social media tools. Heiser pointed out that the City of Roseville
does not have a Facebook page, It does have a Twitter account, but people
utilizing Twitter to contact the city are referred to its website. Heiser
stated that there are challenges for small organizations to keep social
media outlets current, and felt that resources were better directed to
websites. Again, if cities want a two.way communication tool, such as
Facebook or Twitter, an on.staff media specialist is typically necessary.
Keis suggested that the City not move forward with additional social
media outlets at this time, but keep an eye on it, McGraw agreed and
suggested that the City keep its focus on the website. It was noted that the
website provides the opportunity for people to sign up for automatic
notifications as new information is posted.
Keis noted the automatic dialing programs that St. Paul and Minneapolis
have in place to notify people of snow emergenoies, etc, The City
Administrator reported that the Sheriff's Department was going to put that
sort of program in place under its previous administration. He noted that
the City does hand drop notifications for such things as water main breaks,
etc, Heiser indicated that there are privacy issues with email addresses,
and the Legislature is looking at putting some protections in place, At this
point anyone who signs up for email notifications from the City's website
has opened their email address as public information,
The consensus of the Council was to not move forward with establishment
of a Facebook page or Twitter account at this time, Keis suggested,
however, that the question should be asked annually to ensure that the City
provides what citizens what/prefer,
Reiser reported that Roseville is going to a different service provider for
its website maintenance. The program they will be using is Joomla, which
is a content management program that is provided at no cost. It is
currently being used by Ramsey County and the White House.
2
