MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
January 6, 2005
The Director stated that the contractor only bid two fields at a time. However, we may be able
to add the other two fields to the bid. The other two fields are scheduled to be completed this
fall.
SIGNS Sanders stated that the firefighters have a few changes they would like to see made to signage
planned for the firefighters trail. He reviewed the names the firefighters have been discussing
for the trail, including, but not limited to, "Firefighters Memorial Trail," "Firefighters Historical
Trail," and "Firefighters Commemorative Trail." Boss stated that the word "memorial" sounds
tragic. She preferred the words "historical" or "commemorative." The other commissioners
agreed. Sackett Glaser preferred usage of the word "firefighters" rather than "fire department"
since firefighters sounded more human and less institutional.
Sanders stated that the firefighters would like to see the words "City of Little Canada" on the
sign be replaced with "Little Canada Fire Department." Sackett Glaser indicated that she was
fine with dropping the "City of', but preferred to leave it as "Little Canada" rather than "Little
Canada Fire Department." She said that both the City of LitCle Canada and the LitCle Canada
Fire Department funded completion of the trail so she felt that both should get the credit. Boss
commented that the sign should be cohesive with the other park signs throughout the city.
Sanders indicated that he will meet with the firefighters and pass on the commissioners'
comments to them.
Sanders stated that work is scheduled to begin on the Spooner Park sign.
Sanders stated that there are some places that warrant stop signs on trail extensions. Other areas
do not require stop signs due to the low volume of riaffic. The two areas that do need the signs
include LaBore Road under the power lines and also Country Drive at South Owasso Boulevard.
The Director stated that the busier streets will dictate whether a stop sign is necessary. City
staff will follow this guideline when deciding where to install the signs.
Broten asked if there has been any more discussion on painting of crosswalks. The Director
stated that he could not recall any discussion, but he would ask the Street Department for their
input on this matter.
PROGRAM The Director passed out a list of the proposed program fees for 2005. Sackett Glaser asked why
FEES there was such a large increase proposed for the basketball league. The Director stated that the
gym rental fees have been increased by the school district.
SteinerC asked if the shelter rentals will be split Co accommodate two rentals each day. The
Director stated that although the shelters have been rented on a consistent basis, he felt that the
current usage did not warrant this change. He will continue to monitor this situation for possible
implementation in the future.
Sackett Glaser asked why the upper shelter fees at Spooner Park were different for weekdays
versus weekends. She noted that fees for the lower shelter were the same on all days of the
Page 4 of 6
