NSCAH's mission is that persons with disabilities be given equal opportunity to
become full participating citizens in all segments of society by advocating
removal of environmental, attitudinal and comunication barriers in the Metro
North Suburban Area, particularly Anoka County.
In summary, NSCAH is a social action organization of/for persons with
disabilities advocating removal of barriers that hinder opportunities for
disabled persons from becoming full participating citizens. Disabled persons
become informed of their rights and by self-determination advocate for change
and solicit cotmnunity support in making these changes.
IV. Statistics Regarding Population Served by NSCAH, Inc.
From the results of surveys conducted in conjunction with Anoka County
Community Health and Social Services, we have learned that approximately 10% of
our population (20,000 people in Anoka County) have mobility problems or some
other impairment. Population indicators show that as the population of our
area continues to age, this figure will increase. National studies have shown
that 40% of Americans over age 65 have some form of disability. Additionally.
a 1981 survey sample studies in Coon Rapids, indicated that 10% of the City's
population was disabled. Of that number over 50% had incomes below or near the
poverty level. In 1982, the International Year if Disabled Persons Project
Committee surveyed 671 households in the City of Fridley and found that 17 1/2%
(118) of the households indicated that at least one (1) member was functionally
disabled.
In 1988-89 Anoka County in conjunction with NSCAH, Inc. mailed out 30,000
mobility related surveys to county residents. Of that 3.704 surveys were
returned (12%), 485 indicated that a disability hindered their travel. An
assistive device for walking such as crutches, cane or walker was used by 123.
Wheelchair users were 64. Further statistics are available upon request.
