COUNCIL MEETING JANUARY 23, 1995
and said that Rise, Inc. would appreciate whatever the City
Council could provide for this project.
Meals on Wheels (Requesting $2,873.00) - Maggi Novak, Program
Director explained that her organization serves, Lino Lakes,
Centerville, Lexington, Circle Pines and a part of the City of
Blaine. Meals on Wheels is one of the programs that provide for
basic needs for seniors and some handicapped persons under 60
years of age.
Ms. Novak explained that CDBG funding for this program is
received from other cities and because of the large increase in
the number of meals requested in this area, had to look for
support from other sources. She explained that in 1994, the need
for the services increased 12%. In 1990, in Lino Lakes, only two
(2) people were served by Meals on Wheels. Now they are serving
27 in Lino Lakes and receiving more requests every day. Lino
Lakes is a rapidly growing area with senior citizens in need of
this basic service.
Ms. Novak brought additional information for the City Council to
review. She also noted that according to the 1990 census, Anoka
County has the fastest growing senior population in the
metropolitan area.
Council Member Neal asked if the senior citizen housing proposed
for Lino Lakes would be served by Meals on Wheels. Ms. Novak
explained that there has to be a need such as a mental or
physical handicap that keeps that person from being able to
prepare their own meals. The money will be used specifically to
pay the coordinator of the program at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
She also noted that federal funding has been cut drastically in
the past few years. Ms. Novak also noted that she does receive
some funding from the Lions Clubs and also some private funding.
Persons receiving the meals must pay according to the ability.
No one is ever turned away because they cannot pay.
Alexandra House, Inc, (Requesting $5,000.00) - Ms. Pat
Prinzevalle, Executive Director of Alexandra House, Inc. asked
for funding to provide intervention services in Lino Lakes. She
noted that intervention services are provided for many
surrounding cities and said that Alexandra House would be excited
to provide these services to Lino Lakes as well. She thank the
Council for their past support and asked that questions be
directed to Connie Moore, Community Programs Director.
Council Member Neal noted that Alexandra House has moved and
asked who is occupying the previous house. Ms. Prinzevalle
explained that a program for youth will be operated from that
PAGE 6
