e. All such tanks must be provided with danger signs painted <br />conspicuously on their sides bearing the words "Inflammable, <br />Keep Fire and Lights Away" in letters at least three inches <br />high. <br />f. All such tanks shall be protected by an embankment or dike <br />with a capacity at least one and one-half times the capacity of <br />the tank and not over four feet high. Such embankment shall be <br />constructed of earthwork or reinforced concrete without openings <br />through it. Earthwork dikes shall be compactly built with a <br />three foot crown and a slope of at least two to one on both sides, <br />that is, the horizontal leg of the right triangle outlining a <br />cross section of the dike shall be at least twice as long as the <br />perpendicular leg thereof. All brush, weeds, and combustible <br />material must be kept cleared away from the embankment and space <br />around the tank. <br />g. All such tanks shall be constructed on a firm foundation and <br />if of metal shall be electrically grounded. Tanks set more than <br />one foot above the surface of the ground must have a noncombustible <br />foundation and supports. <br />h. The premises upon which such tanks are constructed must be <br />surrounded by a substantial fence, adequate to keep out all <br />intruders. <br />i. All such tanks must be painted with a suitable rust -resisting <br />paint. <br />j. All emptying and filling of such tanks shall be by pumpage and <br />such emptying or filling shall be done only when there is a man <br />in constant attendance on the pump. The motor and pump must be <br />located in a separate building at least twenty-six (26) feet from <br />the tanks, warehouse and garage, or entirely surrounded by fire- <br />proof wall. <br />k. All such tanks shall be of material of sufficient thickness <br />to hold the contents safely, and shall have a factor of safety <br />at joints of at least 2.5. All riveted points shall have an <br />efficiency of at least sixty per cent (60%). No verticle tanks <br />shall exceed thirty (30) feet in height. <br />Underground Tanks - All underground tanks shall conform to the <br />following regulations: <br />a. The top shall be below any piping to which they may be <br />connected, and at least three feet below the surface of the <br />ground. <br />b. When under a building, the top shall be at least two feet <br />below the lowest floor. The floor above the tank shall be of <br />reinforced concrete nine inches thick extending twelve inches <br />beyond the outline of the tank in all directions. <br />c. No tank may be installed or maintained in any street, alley <br />or public ground; or under any sidewalk except by ordinance <br />granting a franshise therefor. <br />d. Tanks shall be set on a firm foundation and enclosed in <br />concrete or surrounded with soft earth or sand, well tamped <br />into place. <br />e.
