Park Board Meeting
Monday, March 2, 1992
Asleson will report back at the next meeting regarding sizes and
costs involved in upgrading the fence.
Recreation Update - Marty Asleson reviewed the upcoming Spring
programs. He explained that there is some difficulty in reaching
residents in the city who fall into the Forest Lake and White Bear
Lake School Districts. Currently we are taking advantage of the
Centennial Community Education publication "The Observer". The
Observer is published eight times a year, but only reaches the
Centennial School District residents. We may need to do our own two
season brochure instead of trying to coordinate the programs with
the publication of the Observer and City Newsletters. We are using
many ways to get to people.
Ken Johnson asked about programs for teens. Marty Asleson explained
that this is a major group identified in the comprehensive plan. He
would like to form a Recreation Sub-Committee that would include
teens. This committee would appoint a liaison who would report
directly to the Park Board. He suggested going to the schools to
recruit interested people. Ken Johnson thinks we should not wait tQ
get started. He will get together with Marty to discuss ideas to
get started. Mr. Johnson would like to see a "blurb" about teen
activity in the next publication. Maybe a questionnaire asking for
teen input.
Earth Day — John Bauman reported Earth Day is set for April 25th,
he is working hard looking for volunteers in all capacities. He's
trying to get food donated again this year, that's not going as
well as he would like. He may also be able to get a band. He says
that Blaine Girl Scout Troops want to get more involved this year.
There are several hundred of them. Don Volk explained that with the
success of the Minnesota Highway Department Adopt-A-Road program,
the roads are being kept up fairly well. Perhaps more efforts could
go to clean-up of parks and lakes this year.
Forestry - The City of Lino Lakes received the Tree City USA award
for 1991. Marty Asleson read a letter to the Mayor congratulating
the city. This is the fourth year the city received the award.
Requirements have been raised from $1.00 to $2 .00 per capita for
the City to qualify. Marty Asleson updated the board on tree
planting in the area. Planting will continue and finish up in the
D. Erickson, Sunrise Meadows and Sunnygate additions this year. He
explained that developers are ecsrowing $60. 00 per lot for our
forestry department to plant boulevard trees. Mr. Alseson went on
to explain some of the steps taken when the city plants trees. How
door are hangers used to tell the homeowner what species of tree
was planted and how to water etc. , this seems to give the homeowner
a sense of ownership in the tree. When the planting is finished in
5
