PARR BOARD MEETING
FEBRUARY 3, 1992
plans for a day camp program this summer. He pointed out that we
will be very cautious as this is our first year with a new program,
other cities such as New Brighton have had much success with their
day camp program. Plans are to run this program from Country Lakes
Park or possibly try to get into the Regional Park.
Ken Johnson asked more about the proposed summer programs. He feels
a major group is being left out, he would like to see teens
targeted for programming. He points out that Mayor Reinert, Council
Person Linda Elliott and County Commissioner Margaret Langfeld have
shown concern along these same lines. Mr. Johnson would like to see
something started right away.
A discussion followed Ken Johnson's suggestion. Mainly concerning
a way to find out what teens would like offered for recreation in
the area, a teen center and the needs of the teens. One particular
area for discussion was how to reach the teens to find out what
they want. John Baumann suggested putting a questionnaire in the
Observer or target student newspapers. Marty Asleson will keep
working on this and bring updates back to the board.
Other Old Business: - John Baumann brought up Country Lakes Park
beach. He pointed out that there is a problem with silt coming into
the sand, the beaches are not nice, the water is not good at all.
He asked if there is some way to keep the silt out. Marty Asleson
explained that crews worked on this last summer, and will plan on
keeping it open to public use all summer. The day camp program may
be held here, this could help. He went on to explain that the only
way to clean out silt is to dig it out. There's peat at the bottom
of the lake. A lot of the organic material comes from decayed curly
leaf floating in and sinking, we might experiment with a net by the
reeds to somewhat control it. The plan last year was to have enough
use at the beaches to keep the silt out. This summer again they
will try to keep it as clean as possible. A priority for this
summer will be to keep the park open and looking nice.
NEW BUSINESS•
John Baumann questioned whether there was ever any consideration
given to a large picnic shelter, we don't have any in our city. He
explained that this concern was brought to him by a council person.
He thinks Country Lakes Park would be a good place for it.
Something along the same idea as the large shelter at Golden Lake
Park in Circle Pines. He asked if staff could get some prices for
consideration at the next meeting, prices should be with and
without barbecue grills and with/without canopies.
MON Ken Johnson questioned whether Country Lakes is the best place for
5
