n CITY OF LINO LAKES
PARR BOARD MEETING
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1r 1993
Winter Ice Rink/Shelter User Fee - This item under New Business in
tonight's Agenda was moved to this time to accommodate
representatives from the Centennial Hockey Association who were in
attendance.
Barry Bernstein explained to the board how the city ice skating
facilities are scheduled to accommodate local skating associations.
He related the problems he has in scheduling because of the
limited hockey rinks available for residents and hockey
associations to use. Currently the associations use Sunrise Park
hockey rinks. The association wants to be able to use the hockey
rink at Birch Park for some hours during the week this winter also.
Barry pointed out that he has scheduled the association the same
amount of hours this year as they had last year. His concern is
that there will be time enough for residents to use the rinks for
pick up games. He says there's as much trouble scheduling ice time
in the winter as there is scheduling ball fields for the
associations in the summer. There is the possibility of opening
Lino Park up for use.
Barry explained that with a limited budget, the department could
not afford to keep the shelters open with attendants without
charging by the hour for extended times, like later in the evening
or early on Saturday mornings. He recommended there be a fee set at
$15 per hour for rental of non-scheduled ice time. This would
include a rink attendant, the shelter and lights. Rental of ice
time and shelter use would be available to anyone for skating
parties, etc. , not exclusively hockey associations. This would be
the winter counterpart to renting the parks and shelters in the
summer months.
Terry Tollefson from the Centennial Hockey Association approached
the board. He stated that the association has 126 members. Of
those, 47 are Lino Lakes residents. Mr. Tollefson commented that
there are additional teams this year and asked for more ice time.
He also noted that he is a Lino resident.
The board's general feelings are that the residents should have a
fair share of time extended to them for general use and "pick up"
hockey games. They recommended that Barry and representatives of
the hockey association get together again and try to work out a
schedule agreeable to everyone. The association members alluded to
the fact that they are Lino Lakes residents, when asked how they
felt about paying to use additional ice time. Barry pointed out
that the associations pay up to $90 per hour to rent indoor
facilities.
2
