CITY OF LINO LAKES
PARK BOARD MEETING
MONDAY, JULY 12, 1993
It was decided that perhaps a neighborhood meeting would be helpful
in explaining to residents the concerns of using the field for a
ballf ield with the hopes to resolve this issue in a non-threatening
manner without sending the message that youth are not welcome in
the parks. A letter was sent to residents inviting them to an
informal meeting at the park. Joe Schmidt and Marty Asleson met
with residents there June 3rd. There were several adult residents
and a few youth at the meeting. A variety of comments and opinions
were given. One matter in which nearly everyone agreed was that
there should be an alternative activity provided for the youth such
as a volleyball net. One resident was very vocal at times, he
stated that he has been a resident for 26 years and that the park
was promised to be left an open and undeveloped area. Marty tried
to explain that neighborhoods and ideas change over time,
especially in parks and recreation.
In order to get a better idea of what the residents want, Jacquelyn
Farm made up a survey and brought it through the neighborhood the
next week-end. The survey showed that most favored the park but
would like to see it more passive. Almost everyone would like to
see plantings and foliage at the park. Several people commented
that they would like to see the grass mowed more often. Marty
^ commented that because of the wet summer it has been very difficult
to get in to mow any of the parks.
An alternative play option to baseball was discussed. Volleyball
was suggested and where the net should be placed, and the cost.
Marty Asleson thinks it will cost no more than $300 to install
volleyball nets. Would it be a good idea to put them up where the
kids play ball now? Jacquelyn Farm noted that the Friends of the
Parks Foundation would be willing to incur the cost of installing
a bench here. The tree spade could be used to bring in some trees
from another location.
MOTION: After further discussion, a motion was made by Joe Schmidt
to recommend to council to spend $300 to purchase and install
volleyball equipment and some additional plantings at LaMotte Park.
Motion was seconded by Jacquelyn Farm. All were in favor, motion
carried. It should be noted that Brian Bourassa voted in favor of
installation of volleyball nets, however he wants these minutes to
ref lect that he does not want to discourage children from using the
park.
k. Friends of the Parks
Friends of the Parks Foundation has a new brochure made up now and
will be distributed to all residents with the City Newsletter in
September. There have been several private donations and Ace Solid
,. Waste Incorporated has become the first corporate sponsor. They
8
