1996 City of Lino Lakes Residential Survey 9
low income housing opportunities, and open space. Similarly, majorities or pluralities felt that
Lino Lakes had"too few or too little"of seven characteristics: racial diversity, senior housing
opportunities, light manufacturing industry, heavy manufacturing industry, service and retail
establishments,entertaining and dining establishments,and full-time job opportunities.
Traffic Issues:
Respondents were read a list of six potential traffic problems on residential streets: traffic speed,
traffic volume, children playing, physical condition of the street, pedestrians walking in the
roadway, and bicyclists in the roadway. In no case did more than fifteen percent regard any
problem as a"major problem." In fact, at least fifty-three percent regarded each issues as"not a
problem at all."
Next, residents were read a list of six streets, highways,or intersections and asked about the
traffic safety of each one. A strong fifty-seven percent rated Highway 49 and Birch Street as a
"major traffic safety concern. Between twenty-six percent and thirty-one percent similarly
regarded the Highway 49 and County Road J intersection, the Lake Drive and Main Street
intersection, and the Lake Drive and 35W intersection. Twenty percent rated the 35E and County
Road J intersection as a"major traffic safety concern," while thirteen percent felt the same way
about Centerville Road.
Twenty-eight percent felt there was a significant need for more public transportation near their
neighborhood. Forty-one percent supported increased city funding for more traffic enforcement,
but only twenty percent still favored it if a property tax increase were required to fund it.
Condition of City Streets:
Seventy-two percent rated the overall condition of city streets in Lino Lakes as"excellent"or
"good." Otherwise,twenty-seven percent rated it as"only fair"or"poor." These ratings were
higher than the Metropolitan Area suburban norm. Residents were informed about the current
limits on street reconstruction practices by the Lino Lakes City Charter. Prior to the survey,
forty-seven percent were aware of these City Charter provisions. By a fifty-six percent to twenty-
five percent judgment, residents also favored a City Charter change to allow the City of Lino
Lakes to establish a funding source for street reconstruction purposes.
Transportation Issues:
Seventy-nine percent of the sample reported leaving the City of Lino Lakes on a regular or daily
r1
frDRL
