City of Lino Lakes
Park Board Meeting
n
April 6, 1998
George verified with Rick the exact location and that it included
all of Marshan Park. He clarified that they were not looking to
name a park, but to change the name of an existing park.
Sharon stated that if they were to do that they must go through
the proper channels and guidelines . Pam agreed, explaining that
the name of that park was there before the multi-family housing
came forward because the single family homes were already
established. She assumed that the developer had to do a land
dedication.
Paul expressed sorrow for the family, but felt it was poor timing
to change the name of the park now, seeing as it was already
developed. He felt it was unfortunate that they were put in the
awkward position of denying Mr. Hokanson' s request, especially
since he had always been so cooperative with the City. Paul felt
somewhat undecided and hoped they could come up with something
else that they could do in honor of his grandson. Jeff and Pat
both agreed with Paul . Pat stated that it was very unfortunate
but believed there could be something else done other than
renaming a park.
George stated that he was ambivalent because the park did already
have a name and the three acres is not separate from the adjacent
park property. Sharon asked if Mr. Hokanson is developing the
three acres and suggested that he could name a street after his
grandson. Pam stated that the streets for that development are
already in.
George explained that the Park Naming Resolution did come about
because of this request, and they did need a set policy for
future requests . Jeff indicated that there are memorial plaques
now available to be put in parks and maybe that is an option.
Rick explained that he had already spoken with Mr. Hokanson about
this and he was not receptive to the idea.
Pam stated that if they approved this request, they would be
setting themselves up for problems in the future. She
acknowledged that Mr. Hokanson did not live in the area and, even
though he was developing it, she felt firm about not allowing the
change in name.
George explained that they did have a precedent set in the City
in which a toy structure was donated and a memorial plaque was
placed next to it in the park. Possibly this could be recommended
for Mr. Hokanson.
10
