City of Lino Lakes
Park Board Meeting
January 5, 1998
raises the issue of how Lino Lakes determines names for its
parks, and Rick suggested the necessity for Lino Lakes to develop
a formal policy for this purpose. He provided sample ordinances
from neighboring communities which might be used as sample
guidelines .
Paul asked if a developer is the individual who customarily gives
names to the various elements of his development. Rick agreed
that historically a developer has named his development as well
as provide suggestions for its streets, but the City Council
approves all names such as streets in each development; the
development; however, he pointed out that an official policy
regarding park areas should be in place. Rick asked that in
considering such a policy attention be given to a process for
renaming existing parks as well as for naming new ones . This
would not eliminate the developer' s input, and certainly his
recommendation for names within his development would be
considered. Any name choices would be subject to approval by the
Planning & Zoning Board, and City Council .
Joe suggested a joint effort with Friends of the Park. Rick
agreed, using the example of a contest to name specific parks .
He added that additional parameters that should be considered are
geographical and historical significance .
Pam suggested that individual requests such as Mr. Hokanson' s
might be best acknowledged through a monument or other
recognition within a park rather than naming the park after a
particular person.
Sharon agreed, stating that it would be confusing without some
geographical identity.
Paul pointed out that certain parks in neighboring communities
have been named after individuals, and suggested that in certain
situations it would be appropriate to rename parks after
significant individuals or historical events . He added that
input should be solicited from those who use the park.
George reminded the group that Rick is seeking guidance regarding
protocol for choosing park names . Rick reiterated the option of
soliciting public input through a contest or popular vote of the
citizens .
Paul agreed that the Park Board should be responsible for seeing
to it that the city' s parks are named. He suggested that perhaps
at the planning stage a park could be labeled "development park"
and given a permanent name when the development is under way.
Pam agreed, but reiterated the importance of parameters .
3
