SS';
We spent several months in 2001 rewriting our facility usage guidelines. In the process,
two major changes were made that had an immediate effect on our users. First, the
process for obtaining a weekly playback spot, for series programming, was defined. And
second, membership requirements were established. it is this second change that we
will be examining closely over the next year.
We will be carefully measuring what effect, if any, charging a fee has on class
attendance and on programs produced by the general public. Additional plans include a
complete updating of user records, the creation of bar -coded photo ID cards for
members, the creation of a free introductory class to demonstrate to prospective
members the opportunities available through the Media Center, and expanding the
equipment capabilities available to members. In summary, 2002 staff goals for the
public access department include:
•
.•.
•
.•.
Creating new forms and updating member files
Creating bar -coded photo ID cards
Creating a free introductory class for prospective members
Expanding equipment format for use by members
Writing and conducting an annual membership survey to define future
needs and goals
Over the last couple of years we have refrained from making any major equipment
purchases. Two reasons for this restraint include an attempt to save money for large
future purchases and the expectation that we would receive an equipment grant as a
part of the franchise renewal process. As the possibility of an equipment grant has
become less of a reality, we should begin moving forward with equipment upgrades on
our own, albeit, at a more deliberate pace. The 2002 recommended equipment
purchases are as follows:
• Replace 3/ %" decks in the studio with SVHS and DVCPro decks
The two 3/4" tape decks in the studio have become completely unreliable. At this point,
throughout the rest of the facility, we are utilizing the SVHS format for the general public
and the DVCPro format for staff productions. As both the public and staff currently share
the same studio control room, we propose installing both format decks in the studio.
This would afford us complete flexibility in moving from any camera, to the studio, to any
edit suite.
f
