• <br />• <br />Temporary Signage <br />page 2 <br />We can assemble definitions for the other types of signs, the purposes of which are pretty <br />clear. <br />Regulations <br />The P & Z agreed that temporary signs should be regulated. Staff suggests that banners <br />and portable signs should be distinct subcategories of temporary signs. <br />Currently, most temporary signs are regulated as "portable signs" in our ordinance. The <br />ordinance allows a maximum of four times a year for a total of fifteen days per time. <br />They are to be limited to special events or promotions. A portable sign permit is needed <br />for each time. The permit cost is $25. <br />This seems adequate for the real portable signs that are on wheels or frames, intended for <br />special sales or events. However, the banners and the more flimsy, cardboard and plastic <br />signage are more common and are the cause of most concern. <br />The P & Z suggested the following for banners: <br />32 sf maximum size <br />must be attached to a building <br />(or should we allow them attached to permanent signs ?) <br />one month duration each time <br />maximum number of times per year, to be determined <br />should we require a permit? <br />We need regulations for the miscellaneous temporary signs: the cardboard, flat plastic, <br />and other temporary signs seen at retail businesses. These are more difficult to get a <br />handle on. Staff will work on creating draft requirements for those types and bring it to <br />the next meeting. <br />Regarding some of the other types of temporary signage, several already are addressed in <br />our ordinance: <br />Section IV, par. P.: Real estate development signs or construction site signs <br />may be erected providing they do not exceed one hundred square feet of area, are <br />not more than fifteen feet above grade, and not within one hundred feet of an <br />existing residential structure. <br />Section IV, par. R.: Temporary real estate signs advertising the sale of <br />individual residences shall not require a permit if they are under six square feet. <br />Section IV, par. S: Temporary signs advertising building or land for rent or for <br />sale in all districts may be placed on such property providing such signs are not <br />closer than ten feet to any property line and do not exceed forty square feet in <br />industrial areas and fifteen square feet in other areas. <br />
