AGENDA ITEM 6 F
STAFF ORIGINATOR: Jeff Smyser
C. C. MEETING DATE: April 26, 1999
TOPIC:
\(/
k?' 6(6'
cQ/
Amendment to Sign Ordinance for Motor Fuel Stations
J3ACKGROUND
The existing Sign Ordinance includes a section on service stations. However, the
Ordinance is written in a confusing manner that has made administration difficult. The
attached draft ordinance proposes amendments to section of the Sign Ordinance relating
to service stations only. The Zoning Ordinance uses the term "motor fuel stations" and
the proposed amendment uses that term for consistency. In addition, convenience stores
often are combined with motor fuel in current developments whereas the term "service
stations" implies mechanical services are offered, which may or may not be the case.
The public hearing was opened at the March 10, 1999 P'& Z meeting but continued
because of the late hour to April 14. The recommendation by P & Z was to adopt the
ordinance as proposed. There was some discussion about the height of ground signs.
Staff suggested 10 feet might be more appropriate and P & Z agreed. However, upon
further consideration, staff is comfortable with 25 feet and that is what is in the attached
draft ordinance. This is the first reading of the ordinance by City Council.
OPTIONS
1. Approve the draft ordinance.
2. Approve the draft ordinance with changes.
3. Return to staff for additional research.
RECOMMENDATION
Option 1 or 2.
