8. Vehicles in operation on City streets or highways during hazardous weather conditions shall <br />use their safety beacons and flashers. <br />9. Heavy equipment (tractors, street sweeper, front -end loaders, graders, and etc.) must have <br />flashing lights and beacons turned on when the vehicles are in operation on public streets or <br />highways. <br />10. Any vehicle moving 20 mph or less and not in the regular traffic flow shall have their safety <br />beacons on. <br />11. No vehicles shall be allowed to idle in closed areas or structures, unless properly vented. <br />12. Employees shall secure loose tools and equipment on the floor of the truck cabs or on the <br />front floor of passenger cars. <br />13. City owned vehicles shall not be towed or pushed except by authorized tow trucks and City <br />owned vehicles shall not tow or push privately owned vehicles. <br />14. Employees shall not allow unauthorized persons in or on City vehicles or equipment. <br />15. City vehicles are to be refueled only when the engine has been shut off. <br />16. Vehicles shall use headlights when the following weather conditions exist: snow, fog, heavy <br />clouds, darkness and rain, as per State Statutes. <br />SAFE LIFTING AND CARRYING PROCEDURES <br />1. Employees shall lift loads correctly as to avoid strains and sprains. Employees must <br />determine for themselves the weight he /she can safely lift. <br />2. When preparing to lift, employees' feet should set solidly and far enough apart for good <br />balance and stability. <br />3. Employees should get as close to the load as possible, binding knees to a squatting position. <br />Employees should then raise to a standing position allowing the legs to do the work. The <br />back should be kept as straight as possible. Do not twist body or extend arms from body. <br />MACHINERY <br />1. Machinery is to be started and operated by authorized persons only. <br />2. Before starting any machinery which might endanger others, be sure that everyone is clear of <br />equipment. <br />3. Completely stop the action of any machinery before cleaning, adjusting, oiling, or repairing <br />it, unless permission of the supervisor has been given to do otherwise. <br />4. Machinery is not to be operated unless all guards and safety setups are in place. <br />5. Guards are not to be removed except for repairing, oiling, or adjusting a machine, and then <br />by authorized personnel only. <br />6. Always stop the machine completely before removing the guard. <br />7. Before maintenance work is performed, energy sources must be locked or tagged out. <br />8. Guards must be replaced immediately after work has been completed. If a guard is damaged, <br />the machinery shall be repaired before use. <br />9. If a guard is damaged or unsafe, notify the supervisor immediately. <br />6 <br />
