When inspecting metal and fiberglass ladders, employees should look for tree cracks, sharp <br />projections, faulty rungs, worn non -skid feet, and faulty extension locks. <br />4. Metal ladders shall not be used for electrical work or when they may contact electrical <br />conductors. <br />5. Ladders shall be mounted only upon secured floor and ground surfaces, not on top of boxes, <br />etc., to obtain additional height. <br />6. When using ladders longer than 15 feet, the base of the ladder shall be supported by a second <br />employee. <br />7. Employees shall not use ladders for scaffolds, runways or platforms. <br />8. Employee shall use a ladder that is long enough to reach the objective. The ladder should <br />project at least 36: above the working surface. <br />9. Ladders, which are not self - supporting, should be erected and maintained at a pitch of 75 <br />degrees. <br />10. Ladders shall not be placed in front of doors opening toward the ladder unless the door is <br />temporarily locked and an alternative entrance is provided for. <br />11. Only one individual shall occupy a ladder at a time. <br />12. The top rung of the ladder shall not be used as a step. <br />13. All stepladders shall be equipped with a metal spreader, which shall be opened a full 180 <br />degrees while the ladder is in operation. <br />14. Ladders shall be returned to their appropriate storage areas and placed in a horizontal <br />position after each use. <br />15. Heavy or long ladders shall be carried by at least two people. <br />16. When transporting a ladder, it shall be firmly attached to the vehicle. <br />17. Ladders extending more than two feet from the front or back of a vehicle shall be marked <br />with a regulation size red flag. <br />18. Ladders shall meet all of the requirements as stated in Construction Standards and <br />Interpretations, Subpart L, Section 1926.450, subsection (b). <br />WORK BELOW AND ABOVE SURFACE <br />Sewers <br />1. Guards and signals shall be placed around any area in which employees are engaged in street <br />excavation, repair or sewer cleaning. <br />2. Manhole covers, which are not provided with lifting devices, shall be raised slightly on one <br />edge and then slid away from the hole. <br />3. Employees engaged in sewer cleaning operations shall wear waterproof gloves, and eye <br />protection. <br />4. Before entering a manhole or lift station, the employee shall properly test for poisonous and <br />explosive gases, and for lack of oxygen. Fresh air respirators (BioPack) shall be kept close at <br />hand in case gases are present. <br />5. When depth and condition of manhole constitute a safety hazard, a harness with a lifeline <br />shall be worn. <br />11 <br />
