6. Cylinders in use shall be kept as far as practical from actual welding operations. <br />7. The combination of oil or grease and oxygen is extremely flammable. Therefore, oxygen <br />cylinders shall not be handled with greasy or oily gloves, and oxygen line fittings shall never <br />be oiled. <br />8. Caution shall be taken to keep people away from hot materials. <br />9. Cylinders shall be kept away from metal or conductive surface, which might be used as a <br />grounding device for electrical current. <br />10. Cylinder valves and torch valves shall be securely closed during breaks, lunch, overnight, or <br />when not in use. <br />11. The printed instructions supplied by the manufacturer shall be adhered to both for gas and <br />electrical welding operations. <br />12. Clothing worn by welders should be flame retardant and free from oil or grease. Sleeves and <br />pockets should be kept buttoned to prevent lodging or sparks in this area. <br />13. Appropriate eye and foot protection shall be used for welding or heating operations. <br />Arc Welding and Cutting <br />1. Before beginning operations, all connections to the machine shall be checked to determine <br />that they are properly made and securely attached. <br />2. Grounding of welding frames shall be inspected to determine their soundness. <br />3. Electrode cables shall be thoroughly inspected before operations in ensure against cracks and <br />worn areas. <br />4. Electrode holders are to be stored in an area where they cannot contact persons, conducting <br />objects, or compressed gas containers. <br />5. Welding should be done in screened areas when there is danger of exposing other individuals <br />in the vicinity. <br />6. Clothing worn by welders should be flame retardant and free from oil or grease. Sleeves and <br />pockets should be kept buttoned to prevent lodging of sparks in this area. <br />7. Protective gloves and apron shall be worn by the employee performing the welding task. <br />8. Appropriate eye and foot protection shall be used for welding or heating operations. <br />CHEMICALS /SOLVENTS <br />1. Material Safety Data sheets shall be available to all employees and should be used in <br />accordance with City Personnel Policy 207.32. <br />2. All handling of chemicals and solvents shall be done in accordance with State and OSHA <br />rules and regulations. <br />3. Appropriate protective clothing must be worn by personnel when handling chemicals and <br />solvents. <br />13 <br />
