002
COUNCIL MEETING
February 24, 1986
Page Two
be. listed in the zip code directory because it does not have a
post office.
Mr. Sozma indicated that the post office is presently trying an-
other method of sorting mail and'that is a machine that reads the.
mail by post office name as well as zip code. He expects that when
this method is operational it will save money and man hours. How-
ever, this will mean that all mail must be addressed with the proper
post office name as well as the zip code.
A gentleman asked hbw he should address his mail because'his mail
presently comes from the'New Brighton post office. Mr. S`ozma ex-
plained to him.
Mr. Karth noted that all mail is presently sorted by zip code and
not by City. He explained the difficulties some one would have
trying to find-a Lino Lakes resident with a Hugo address. They find
that such an address does not exist. Mr. Sozma said that there.is
a problem with using Lino Lakes and the proper zip code. This method
could often result in a delay of delivery of that piece of mail. He
also noted that although the new sorting machines are still just in
the trial stages, they will be used more and more in the future. He
also said residents of Lino Lakes should start addressing their mail
correctly right now.
There was discussion regarding mail being addressed Lino Lakes, 55038
Mr. Nelson said those using this address risk a delay of their mail
since the post office recognizes everything addressed Lino Lakes as
being in the Circle Pines postal area.
Mayor Benson asked why cannot Lino Lakes have a substation or some-
thing within the community where we would retain our identity and
retain the identity of the different zip codes. He noted we are a
growing community and he felt we warranted some type of recognition.
Mr. Nelson explained Lino Lakes could build a contract station, how-
ever, very few new post offices are being built these days because
of the cost. He noted a new post office is being constructed in
Blaine, however, not all of Blaine residents will receive mail from
this post office. Some residents will still get their mail from
Circle Pines.
Mayor Benson asked why the Circle Pines post office cannot be re-
named the Circle Pines /Lino Lakes post office. Mr. Nelson said that
the City of Lexington had also asked the same question. There is a
problem with the computer in that it can handle a limited size of
post office name. He felt establishing a contract would be a more
viable option and explained the method of establishing a contract
station. Someone bids and says they will supply a certain number
of square feet and says they will keep it open a certain number of
hours Monday through Friday and a certain number of hours on-Satur-
day for a set amount of money to be paid by the post office.
