1
1
COUNCIL MEETING
February 24, 1986
Page Three
said he could send a letter to all businesses asking them if they
would be willing to bid on a contract station. If someone said
yes, then it could be constructed.
Mr. Karth asked if a contract station could give the City one zip
code. Mr. Nelson said it would give the business person a
street address, a box address in Lino Lakes, Minnesota. This will
get Lino Lakes listed in the zip code directory.
Mr. Karth noted that the Circle Pines Post Office is considering
building larger facilities. Why not move the new facility three
miles north into Lino Lakes since Lino Lakes is already a larger
City. Mr. Nelson said that would cause problems with Circle Pines
although it could save mondy.
Mrs. Storberg noted problems with finding Lino Lakes residents with
Circle Pines addresses. She said it will be even more confusing
when the additional zip code is instituted. Again Mr. Nelson ex-
plained even if a Lino Lakes Post Office were established, not all
of the Lino Lakes residents would use that post office.
Mrs. Storberg asked what the criteria was for establishing a post
office. Mr. Nelson said there is not any as far as population is
concerned. He said he has projected the Lino Lakes population for
the next fifteen years and believed based on those projections,
Lino Lakes would not get a post office before the year 2000.
Mayor Benson asked the total number of residents and businesses
being served from Circle Pines and Hugo. It= was -noted Circle Pines
serves 5,100 and Hugo 1,770. Mayor Benson then asked using that
criteria when would Lino Lakes get its own post office? Mr. Nel-
son said based on the population projections, Lino Lakes probably
would never get its own post office but probably a branch office
by about 1990. However, he felt a contract station is the way to
get started right now.
Ms. Connie Nelson who is representing the Chamber of Commerce noted
how strange the address is for the bank located in Lino Lakes. She
also noted the Chamber feels Lino Lakes businesses need identifica-
tion. Mr. Peterson noted Acton Construction uses the Hugo address
and does not have a problem. It was noted they are located on the
freeway and are more visable and easy to find.
Mr. Reinert asked Mr. Nelson how he proposes to solve the problems
noted tonight. Mr. Nelson said he has the authority to approve a
contract station and felt that was the way to begin to solve some
of the problems and get Lino Lakes listed in the zip code directory.
However, the directory would assume that all Lino Lake's residents
will be in the 55014 zip code area.
003
