112
COUNCIL MEETING DECEMBER 14, 1987
written response to the goals. Mr. Schumacher was concerned because
one goal is for the completion of the upgrading of the Lino Lakes fi
station by July, 1988. This is not included in the 1988 budget.
Mayor Benson noted that at the joint meeting on December 7th, this
Council was definite about not having the Lino Lakes fire station
fully operational until July, 1989.
Mr. Andy Neal from the audience said there may have been some
misunderstanding because the City is currently recruiting firemen and
they will be trained by July, 1988. However, the station must be
expanded before it can be fully operational. Mr. Marier felt the
training should continue to completion and some vehicles could be
moved to this station. The building will not be self sufficient until
July, 1989.
Mayor Benson asked that the Park Department be re- adjusted to be sure
there is enough time budgeted for oak wilt control and also asked that
pressure be placed on the state as well as Anoka County for additional
funding. Mr. Volk noted that with the proposal to hire a foreman and
recreational director, Mr. Hoffman will be freer to concentrate on
this problem.
Mr. Marier moved to close the public hearing at 8:22 P.M. Mr.
Bohjanen seconded the motion. Motion carried unanimously.
Mr. Marier moved to approve the 1988 budget as presented. There was
no second to this motion.
Mr. Bisel asked if the budget is proposing two squad cars. Chief
Campbell said yes but he had requested three squads because all three
squads will turn over 100,000 miles during the year. Mr. Bisel asked
what happens to retired squads. Chief Campbell said they are stripped
of police equipment and then placed on auction. Mr. Bohjanen asked if
the retired squads could be used by another department. Mr. Volk said
yes if there is a need and there is a squad that would be appropriate.
Mayor Benson asked if three squads could be purchased from the
proposed Police Department budget. Chief Campbell said no. Mr.
Marier suggested that money for the third squad could come from the
Planners budget.
Mr. Marier moved to purchase a third squad car and take $20,000 from
the Planners budget to pay for it. Mr. Bohjanen seconded the motion.
There was discussion on whether or not there actually was a surplus in
the Planners budget and it was decided that there is none. Mr.
Schumacher explained that the only surplus was $5,381 in the entire
1988 Budget. Mr. Marier withdrew his motion and Mr. Bohjanen withdrew
his second.
PAGE 6
