most long term effect on area residents that was begun in <br />1987 is "Solid Waste Abatement ". Solid Waste Abatement is a <br />State initiated, County imlemented program designed to <br />support existing and future recycling systems. According to <br />the guidelines, yard waste will not be allowed into <br />landfills, and metro area communities with a population over <br />5,000 shall implement, at a minimum, once a month curbside <br />collection of at least three items by 1990. City staff, in <br />conjunction with Anoka County and surrounding communities is <br />working on a program to meet these requirements. For our <br />part, we have already established a compost site open from <br />May - October for daily residential drop -off of yard waste. <br />As part of the City reforestation effort, seedlings will <br />again be for sale at City Hall on and around Arbor Day. In <br />addition, trees and seedlings will be planted in City parks <br />by local elementary students. <br />This winter has seen our snow plowing efforts increased <br />dramatically over last years mild winter. Citizen response <br />to our request for cooperation in helping City crews with <br />snow plowing has been tremendous. Cars are being removed <br />from city streets thus eliminating the "snow bird ticket ". <br />City crews have attended snow fighting seminars which helps <br />to bring their techniques up to par with the rest of the <br />metro area. <br />The summer of 1988 will see approximately 1 mile of road way <br />overlays taking place.
