026
COUNCIL MEETING
APRIL 25, 1988
The motion carried with Mr. Bisel voting no and Mayor Benson
voting yes.
SYNOPSIS OF 1987 HUNTING ISSUES WITHIN THE CITY
Chief Campbell has prepared a memorandum to Mr. Schumacher
dated April 5, 1988 regarding the past hunting season. He
explained that the concern this past season was in regard to
the special goose hunting season. He noted that most of the
calls received by his department were informational calls,
with a few trespassing calls. In summary he felt there has
not been a big problem. Mr. Dave Rodahl of the DNR was with
Chief Campbell. He felt the problem last year was that
citizens were not aware of the early goose season. He noted
that the early season did thin down the goose population and
the intent of the early season was to get the birds before
they migrated to urban areas. There may be another early
season this year and he will let the City know as early as
possible.
Mayor Benson asked Chief Campbell if the City should start
looking at adjusting the "no hunting" boundaries. Chief
Campbell said not at this time and also noted that he felt
the hunting ordinances were working well. Mr. Rodahl said
the main concern is safety however the second problem is
controlling the deer population. There is no hunting at all
in Ramsey County and Lino Lakes is rural enough to attract
the deer.
Mr. McDonald, 6901 LaMotte Drive explained he had a problem
with hunters in the bay area and hunters were shooting
toward his house. The second concern was that hunters were
parking on LaMotte Drive in his area and then walking into
the Regional Park to hunt.
Mr. Bohjanen asked if there were special requirements for
hunting during the early goose season. Mr. Rodahl said
rules and regulations were sent out with the permits. Mayor
Benson said the problem in many instances is that when a
violation occurs, the violator has disappeared before law
authorities arrive. He asked how this situation should be
handled in the future. There was no answer.
Mr. Mastro asked what is the City's position on the proposed
Vaughan Game Farm. Mr. Schumacher explained that further
information is still forth coming from Mr. Vaughan. This
will be brought to Council next month.
PAGE 6
