3n4 <br />COUNCIL MEETING <br />DISBURSEMENTS: <br />November 22, 1993 <br />Centennial Fire Department <br />REGULAR AGENDA <br />NOVEMBER 22, 1993 <br />Approved <br />Approved <br />Anoka County Sheriff, Ken Wilkinson - Sheriff Wilkinson thanked <br />the City Council for the opportunity to appear before them. He <br />explained that each year he tries to touch base with each City <br />Council within Anoka County in a continuing effort to maintain <br />and strengthen effective communication between the Sheriff's <br />office and each community. He explained that he wanted to use <br />this opportunity to check on the County's effort in providing <br />service to Lino Lakes and also get feedback on ways the Sheriff's <br />office might be more effective. <br />Sheriff Wilkinson noted that the working relationship between his <br />office and the Lino Lakes Police Department continues to be an <br />excellent relationship. He noted pleasure in the hiring of David <br />Pecchia as Lino Lakes Chief of Police and explained that he has <br />known Chief Pecchia for many years. <br />Sheriff Wilkinson noted several examples of how the Sheriff's <br />Department has worked with the Lino Lakes Police Department. <br />Special services offered to the Lino Lakes Police Department <br />include an investigative unit, a sexual assault unit and a drug <br />enforcement unit. Sheriff Wilkinson explained the purpose of <br />each unit and noted some examples of how these units assisted the <br />Lino Lakes Police Department in the past year. He noted an <br />upward trend in reported sexual assaults in Anoka County and <br />noted that "hard core" drugs are being experienced as well. <br />Other services provided by the Sheriff's Department include a <br />crime lab processing unit, jail facility, canine unit, SWAT team, <br />and the DARE program. Sheriff Wilkinson outlined briefly each <br />program. <br />Council Member Neal asked if the DARE program was supported by <br />donations. Sheriff Wilkinson said no, the DARE program is <br />provided to the City of Lino Lakes on a contract basis. The City <br />pays about 1/2 the cost of a staff person and about 1/2 the cost <br />of the books and materials given to school children. The balance <br />of the program is funded from funds and materials confiscated <br />from drug dealers.
