COUNCIL MEETING APRIL 22, 1996
He said that guns will kill people only if people pull the trigger. Cars will also kill people
only if people neglect the safety of the cars. Mr. Christenson said lets use the street for
what is was intended, the automobile. He said every morning he goes to Burger King.
He is confronted with joggers and people with dogs half way out in the street. Mr.
Christenson said that if he walks in the middle of the street, no matter what the speed
limit is, he is going to get killed. He said use common sense and if you do not want to
get killed on the street, don't walk in the middle of the road. Mr. Christenson said that he
is 70 years old and has only a ninth grade education, however, common sense says if I do
not want to get run over by a car, don't get in front of the cars.
Gregg Jenks, 327 Elm Street - Mr. Jenks asked if he could discuss the buffer behind his
house or is this hearing about Elm Street only. Mr. Ahrens said that he should be talking
to the architects for the middle school. Mr. Jenks said that he will have a baby at his
house in about two (2) months. He said he is concerned about his safety backing out of
his driveway with the increased traffic. Mr. Jenks said that he will not "get over this" as
the gal told his neighborhood to do. This affects him and his family and yes he wants the
school children to be safe but he wants to be safe too. That is the issue and Mr. Jenks
said that he wanted a final decision that everyone could agree on. He said that there are
some big issues to deal with. Mr. Jenks said that as soon as there is a solution that works
for the neighborhood and everybody else, the neighborhood will be glad to back it up. He
said that he does not feel good about the added traffic by his house. He has to back out
with a baby in the car. These problems will not go away until a solution is going to work
for everybody. There is two sides to this issue and there has to be a compromise. Now it
does not look good for the Elm Street neighborhood. He asked people to come and look
at his situation and then maybe they will understand his concern.
Mona Slaten, 6283 Red Maple Lane - Ms. Slaten said that she will have a student going
to the middle school. She said she has looked at all of the plans and studied all of the
options. She and her husband both like option F for all of the reasons that have been
previously stated.
Ms. Slaten said that she has a concern regarding meeting the timeline for completion of
the building itself. She said that she works at the Rice Lake Elementary and understands
that if the middle school does not meet the stated timeline, there will be a very deep
trouble with the student population at the Rice Lake Elementary School as well as the
other elementary schools within the district. She would like the City Council to keep in
mind the timelines that have been established and do everything possible to keep the
entire project on time.
Bob Young, 7026 Second Avenue - Mr. Young said that if he could select an option it
would be D. He said that some of the people in immediate area would prefer A and B.
However, Mr. Young said that he would not prefer either of those options because it will
be additional traffic down his street. Mr. Young said that he favors Option D followed by
Option F. Everyone favors Option F except the residents of Wenzel Farms. He said that
he is not "cold" enough to say to them "to bad, I don't care". Mr. Young said the nice
PAGE 23
