CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION AUGUST 8, 2001
Mr. Paul Nyberg, Red Maple Lane, stated safety is a big issue on 62nd Street, however,
pedestrian traffic is not the only issue. He asked the City Council to drive on 62nd Street
before a vote is taken. Reconstruction of 62nd Street should take place before the project
moves forward.
Mr. Tom Droe, Red Maple Lane, stated he was at the Planning and Zoning Board meeting
when this project was originally proposed. Tonight he is hearing a reversal of some ideas
relating to pushing the road through. Now he is hearing that the road should be pushed
through and a path constructed. The path is necessary because there will be more traffic
on 62nd Street. He referred to the path problems in Millers South Glen noting he does not
have much faith in paths. He stated he had originally brought up the idea of blocking the
road to the north and was told that is not a good idea. Pushing the road through is the
major block for the project. At all the meetings the idea of pushing the road through has
been received negatively. Hawthorne was built for traffic. At the
Engineer indicated West Shadow would be better for the const
the Council to remember what led to the decisions that were
meeting. West Shadow Lake Drive is a State Aid road
connected to County Road J. It is a mistake to not do
Street.
Rosemary Williams, 498 62nd Street, stated
distributed a copy of the petition noting she
signed the petition is opposed to the pr. ;. t.
Street. Everyone who
already too much traffic on 62nd
Street. It would be obscene to approve
e petition again noting she does not want
er needs to be settled.
tate i''` e wants to sell some of his property and hopes the
Mr. Barry Rice, 6662 F R `'ad, stated he is opposed to any barriers because once they
are up it is tough to get t m removed. He stated the pedestrian path is a great idea. He
stated he wants the project to go through. He added there is more pressure on Birch
Street and more access is needed. He stated he does understand it is a difficult decision.
Mr. Brian Olson, 511 Hawthorne Road, came forward and distributed information and
stated there are concerns on both sides of this issue and he believes they are mirrored.
Traffic studies do not show conclusively that traffic will be increased on 62nd Street due
to this project. The traffic may actually decrease on 62nd Street and increase on West
Shadow Lake Drive. He referred to a letter that was sent by the Police Department and
Fire Department indicated they are supportive of the road connection. One hundred and
fifty six days have gone by since this project was first brought to the table. Many
residents knew nothing about it until January. He stated he is not against the project but
is against the barricade. He distributed another petition with an additional 24 signatures
3
