JOINT COUNCIL MEETING JUNE 17, 2002 <br />Councilmember Reinert stated he hopes staff can gather information that will help <br />determine why the birds are leaving their nests. <br />Environmental Specialist Asleson stated staff is trying to gather the necessary <br />information. He noted the eagles are still on the island. This is a bad situation and staff <br />has not yet figured it out. The no wake zone was not given a chance because it was not in <br />effect long enough to make a difference. <br />Councilmember Nelson stated that if this is a big issue for both Council's then it needs to <br />be investigated further. She suggested both cities work with the police to keep people off <br />the island. <br />Environmental Specialists Asleson stated the sample eggs that were taken will be <br />analyzed. <br />Mayor Swedberg stated a lab analysis is needed to determin- appening with the <br />eggs. <br />Councilmember Capra suggested each city send a lett td 'INR requesting further <br />investigation. <br />Councilmember Nelson stated she would prefer to more careful than not regarding this <br />issue. She stated action needs to be taken. <br />Councilmember Reinert suggested a l.> ' established for people found on the <br />island. <br />Environmental Specialists Asle & d .ka County is in charge of the island and <br />enforcement. <br />City Administrator Moor des gg-sted a flyer be sent to the high school information <br />students of this issue. <br />Councilmember Nelson suggested a notice also be put in the Quad. <br />Councilmember Carlson stated the DNR and the County are looking into the cause of the <br />birds leaving again. They are still considering the possibility of predators or disease. The <br />news report suggested the cause may be linked to toxins in the food chain. She stated this <br />issue ties into the greenways and preserving what natural land both cities have left. She <br />noted she also heard there has been a lot of high speed boating around the island. <br />Environmental Specialist Asleson stated the boating data will be gathered and put <br />together in a report. <br />
