_� <br />Skating is an activity which can be en�oyed by peraons of all agee. For thi� <br />reason, ekating can become a family activity. However, hockey emphasis.,rough <br />play, and noiey rambunctious youngsters often discourages adult participation <br />in skating activity. It ia for the family and adult participants this Ardan <br />Park skating ponds are deaigned. The ponds provide two natural ice sheete <br />which are aurrounded by ber�, plantings, and natural structures. The ponds <br />will be aesthetically pleaeing and will discourage competitive skating and <br />encourage leisure pleasure skating. The ponds will be dimly lighted to ensure <br />low key activity and soliiude. <br />Other kounds View parks do not offer such a akating ettoosphere. On the <br />contrary, other park rinka cater to [he young and do r.ot offer aesthetic <br />settinge. Ardan Park skating ponda will require lees supervision and <br />oaintenance. Base ice is already established. Adults require less supervision <br />and ate ueually more responsible, and parenta usually adequately supervise <br />their children. <br />The holding pond water reaource providee an attraction for wildlife. Ducka <br />have been aighted oa the ponds many times. Wildlife provides exciYing obser- <br />vaCion subjecte and accente the environmental atmoaphere of the park. Such <br />wildlife environment provides uniqueness, excitement, and attractiveness <br />to Ardan Psrk. The park may be ueed in nature studiea and observations <br />especiallq by Red Oak School peraonnel and students. Red Oak School is 3 <br />blocke from Ardan Park which le in deFinite walking distance. <br />The natural environment emphasis will provide an aesthetic appeal and attractive- <br />ness to residents and users. The paesive activity emphasis will promote and <br />encourage little wear and tear of the park. Attractive berms, plantings, <br />ehruba, bushes, and other landscapinge will provide a pleasureable area for <br />usera. A fowtain is planned for one of the ponds. The fountain will draw <br />attention to the pond and will provide a moving higfilight. The other pond <br />will have a fowl island to encaurage nesting. <br />Trails <br />Ardan Park is the only park in the city of Mo�mds View vhich is blessed with <br />water resource. Therefore, having a water emphasis, this park should hold a <br />apecial use, a special purpoae for reaidents of Mo�mde View. <br />Trail syatems are proposed for many reasons: <br />Bike trails are proposed to connect parks in Nbunde View and to follow a <br />Ramsey County trail system. <br />2. Strolling paths within the park enhances the leisure enjoyment far <br />neighboring evening, morning, and daytime outdoor atrolls. <br />3. Wintertime crosa country aki trails encourage participation in thie lifetime <br />and family activity. Such a trail has the potential of becomiag an iater- <br />connecting erail becreen Greenfleld and Ardan Parke. <br />A Rameey County bike trail eyatem has been propoaed and many Ramsey County <br />municipalitiea have folloved the syetem. Likewiae. the city of Mounde View <br />aleo plans to incorporate such a bike trail aystem which compliments the <br />Rameey Cowty proposal. The Mounda View plan is to connect the ci[y parks <br />vith a bike trail vhich uaes streeta and are marked by bike trail sigas. <br />Parka however will provide bike pathe mithin the parke.
