-4- <br /> • Maintain contact with other Police Departments in surrounding jurisdictions as well <br /> as metropolitan professional police organizations to keep abreast of new training <br /> procedures and developments. <br /> • Accept opportunities to address various civic groups on important aspects of police <br /> issues. <br /> BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE <br /> Candidates for the position of Police Chief should possess a B.A. degree in police <br /> science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field and a <br /> minimum of ten years experience in police work, five of which must have been <br /> equivalent to the position of Police Sergeant or higher. Candidates must have completed <br /> the basic law enforcement training academy and be P.O.S.T. certified or eligible for <br /> certification. Qualified candidates should possess: <br /> • Broad background in all areas of law enforcement including patrol work and <br /> investigative practices and techniques. <br /> • Some experience in working with elected officials. <br /> • Familiarity with police issues related to a small city, suburban environment. <br /> Understand the impact of social and economic diversity within a community. <br /> • Experience in holding public meetings and dealing with neighborhood and <br /> community organizations. <br /> • Orientation towards Community Policing and D.A.R.E. programs and principles. <br /> • Some experience in traffic enforcement. <br /> • Good budgeting skills. <br /> • Experience in union labor issues including grievances and mediation. <br /> • Knowledge of liquor enforcement issues and public safety issues related with food <br /> and liquor establishments. <br /> • Familiar with special needs of multiple housing as relates to law enforcement. <br />
