Is PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY
PARKS:
* Over 120 FREE bicycle helmets were given to Mounds View youth this past Saturday at
the Bicycle Safety Day activity at City Hall. Volunteers included Parks and Recreation
Commissioners Sherry Gunn, Pam Starr, Gary Stevenson, and Frank Silvis and Park
Patrol Greg Frausone, staff members Cathy Bednar and Mary Saarion. Three North
Suburban Schwinn employees staffed the bicycle maintenance activity - and were kept
busy the whole time. There were many positive comments from parents in appreciation
of the program. A bicycle safety check began the program followed by an obstacle
course and safety video. Helmets were fitted and distributed to each youth participant.
Other safety materials were provided along with a certificate. Special thanks to the
volunteers who put in many hours of their time making this event a success.
An on-going incentive program will be implemented encouraging youth to wear their
bicycle helmets. Tokens will be handed out to youth that are noticed wearing their
helmets while riding their bikes. When 5 tokens have been collected, they can be
redeemed at the Parks and Recreation Department in exchange for a free open swim pass.
* Youth athletic pictures were taken this week. We contracted with a different photography
company, Star Sports Photography -who did an excellent job! They were very
organized, had three photographers working and were even ahead of schedule!
Unbelievable!
* Players benches were purchased and are being installed at the two back fields at
Edgewood Middle School. As partners in use of the athletic facilities, we have been
participating in joint ventures, this being just one example. In addition, we have
contributed to the replacement of tennis nets, the availability of outdoor portable
restrooms and field grooming and maintenance activities.
* Lakeside Park Beach opens this Saturday. Luckily the temperatures are predicted to be in
the 80's. Unfortunately the water temperature has some warming yet to do before it is
comfortable for swimming.
* The summer is booked for picnic rentals at the various"picnic"parks. Several large
events have also been booked including the MSA Fundraising Event in September, Sysco
Employees Picnic is August, Schwinn Exhibition in August, Regional Baseball
Tournament in June and Festival in July. All these events bring in hundreds and
thousands of people to the City of Mounds View, providing a positive economic impact
