7

Canine Unit (K-9)

In June, Officer Erickson and Niko competed with 83 other K-9
units from region 12 of the United States Police K-9 Association
and received their PD1 Certification. Region 12 includes K-9 units
from Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, and
Manitoba, Canada. This year the K-9 trials were held in Elk River,
MN from June 28 to June 30th, 2015.

Categories in the trials included obedience, agility, evidence
search, suspect search and two forms of bite work – apprehension
and criminal apprehension with a gun firing. We are pleased to
report that Niko received high marks in all areas of competition.

The K-9 unit responded to 92 calls for service in the second
quarter of 2015. Deployments for this period include assisting with a domestic assault arrest,
residence searches with alarms, article searches, a house search after an open door was
found and a drug search on a vehicle after a traffic stop.

Officer Erickson and Niko are proud to serve the citizens of Mounds View and they are an
integral part of the Mounds View Police Department. The K-9 team conducts daily trainings
that include other Mounds View Officers so all are accustomed to working together. If you
would like more information about the K-9 team or would like to make a donation to help
cover the cost of care and training, please contact the police department at 763-717-4070.

Edgewood
School
students
getting a
chance to
meet Niko
