7 <br /> <br />Canine Unit (K-9) <br /> <br />In June, Officer Erickson and Niko competed with 83 other K-9 <br />units from region 12 of the United States Police K-9 Association <br />and received their PD1 Certification. Region 12 includes K-9 units <br />from Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, and <br />Manitoba, Canada. This year the K-9 trials were held in Elk River, <br />MN from June 28 to June 30th, 2015. <br /> <br />Categories in the trials included obedience, agility, evidence <br />search, suspect search and two forms of bite work – apprehension <br />and criminal apprehension with a gun firing. We are pleased to <br />report that Niko received high marks in all areas of competition. <br /> <br />The K-9 unit responded to 92 calls for service in the second <br />quarter of 2015. Deployments for this period include assisting with a domestic assault arrest, <br />residence searches with alarms, article searches, a house search after an open door was <br />found and a drug search on a vehicle after a traffic stop. <br /> <br />Officer Erickson and Niko are proud to serve the citizens of Mounds View and they are an <br />integral part of the Mounds View Police Department. The K-9 team conducts daily trainings <br />that include other Mounds View Officers so all are accustomed to working together.
