City of Mounds View Staff Report
February 27, 1997
Page 2
111 discussion because it was immediately recommended that the gymnasium be full
size. Task Force members relayed their experiences of using the small modified
gyms of the elementary schools and the restrictions that the smaller gyms pose.
The opportunities for using a full size gym are much greater and like the addition
of the dividing doors in the banquet room, this is seen as a cost effective because
of the extended opportunities for use and multi-use function that the large gym
offers. Padding on the ends of the gym, under the baskets is also recommended as
a safety feature.
6. Designate a Lounge room versus a Senior's room so that it is more multi-
purpose- even though it is presumed to be used by seniors during the day, teens
in the afternoons and adults in the evenings. The room could be a place to read
the paper or books, to visit, work a crossword or puzzle, to use a computer and
exchange books. Because this is an interest of all ages, it is thought that it should
not be identified for only seniors, but all folks.
7. County Office Space: The Task Force asked whether or not there needs to be
space identified for the County -what services would need office space - or if
other shared spaces would do - in the instance of Fare For All and immunizations.
• If that is such a case, the Task Force recommends the elimination of the two small
offices and instead enlarge the lounge space.
8. Gymnasium Use: The Task Force would like the City to negotiate as much prime
time as possible for community use of the gymnasium. It is assumed that youth
athletic groups, after-school use and adult recreation leagues will use the
gymnasium on a regular basis with the addition of special events, sporting activities
and programs and open gyms as other uses. Prime usage times will be 3-8pm M,
T, and Th and l0am-3pm on Saturdays and 1-6pm on Sundays. Any additional
times attached to the front or backend of these times would be popular use times.
These are specific recommendations of the Task Force. Regarding the advisory election, the Task
Force recommends that the Council formulate this option describing the project as has been
reviewed by the Task Force.
•
