constructed in Duluth where they have an agreement with the City of Duluth for unused
gym space, mostly during the day. The association was referred to use by EDC member
Cindy Carlson from Western Bank. The project will be discussed at the EDC meeting on
March 28th and then at the EDA work session in April.
Wetland South of the Bel-Rae:
• The owner of the three lots has agreed to a purchase price of$330,000 for the land.
Apparently he is very ill and would like the transaction to be complete as soon as possible.
Mike and I have discussed funds for the purchase and will present options at the April
work session.
Proposed Theme Hotel and Conference Center in Blaine:
• I have included an article from the Blaine newspaper regarding the City of Blaine's efforts
to locate a full service hotel/conference center near the National Sports Center.
Apparently, the Mayor is pushing for this and the Council has approved $12,000 to study
the idea. In addition, it is proposed that the City of Blaine own and operate the
convention center. This could be very detrimental for Mounds View's project. It may be
worthwhile for the council members to contact Mayor Tinklenberg regarding this project
to see if there is a way for the two Cities to get behind one project, preferably Mounds
View's.
Blaine Brothers Trucking:
• The trucking company located next to the Bridges have applied for a rezoning from the
City of Blaine to expand their truck trailer parking lot. The parking lot would be facing
the Bridges and will only continue to be headache for the City. According to the
Economic Development Specialist in Blaine, staff is not recommending that the property
be rezoned to allow additional parking. The item will go to the Planning Commission in
April and Council in May. This may be a good opportunity for the two new administers to
meet and discuss the negative aspects of allowing them to expand their truck parking..
Cathy
********************
On Wednesday I attended a PRIMA(Public Risk Management Association) meeting. Doug
Grongli, a Claims Manager of the League gave a history of employment-related claims. There
were some pretty sobering statistics regarding the average number and cost of claims to cities a
year. Some important ideas he convey to the group were that of good City policies, active
training of employees and mediation-mediation-mediation.
As the 1996 Budget Book continues to trudge along, I'm also reviewing all sorts of great
information about fiscal disparities. A local chapter of the League of Women Voters has asked
me to present material at their meeting this Saturday morning. If anyone is having problems
sleeping, I have just the cure...
