from a potential abuse problem. <br /> A second employee program that was implemented was the new employee <br /> orientation program. Through a scheduled itinerary, this program <br /> consists of a week of allowing new hires to get to know the City, <br /> the employees, their jobs, policies and codes and other information <br /> that is pertinent to their employment. <br /> An employee safety committee was established to create a safety <br /> policy to comply with the A Workplace Accident and Injury Reduction <br /> Act. The policy has been created and presented to Department <br /> Heads. <br /> UNION CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS <br /> Staff met several times with union representatives to discuss the <br /> 1994 settlement. These settlement attempts were unsuccessful, <br /> which will result in an arbitration hearing in September or <br /> October. <br /> TRAINING <br /> To enhance the City staff's telephone skills, telephone training <br /> was offered to employees. <br /> Also, an employee customer service committee was established to <br /> assist a professional consultant in improving customer relations. <br /> This training will take place in September. <br /> SPECIAL PROJECTS <br /> FOCUS 2000 <br /> The Focus 2000 Final Report was presented to the Council in March <br /> and was studied and prioritized at the Council/Staff Strategic <br /> Planning Session in April. Staff has since been implementing ideas <br /> as directed by Council. Some examples to date include the <br /> employment of Economic Development Coordinator, creation of <br /> Economic Development Authority, re-establishment of a Spring clean- <br /> up day, enhanced City newsletter and employment of Housing Intern. <br /> A Steering Committee, made up of members of the Study Groups, has <br /> been appointed by the Council to oversee the implementation <br /> process. <br /> CITY HALL EXPANSION <br /> This quarter saw the City Hall Expansion project start to wind down <br /> with all of the walk throughs and final inspections taking place <br /> during this time. By June, the base bid work was complete and the <br /> City -hosted an open house to show off the work that was done. <br /> FOCUS 2000 IMPLEMENTATION PLAN <br /> The Focus 2000 Implementation Plan was completed by the end of July <br />
