PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY
PARKS:
1 . Work on the Oakwood Park drinking fountain has continued. Trouble with
undetected buried telephone and other cables were found during the digging -
delaying the project. Thanks to the sharp eyes of Brad Engen and Bill Norman
the cables were spotted before another scoop was made! This experience tells
us that Gopher State First Call does not always locate all the buried cables.
Scary!
2. Mowing has continued - the parks look great!
3. Work on the fields was performed this Wednesday, - the fields often become
bumpy and need leveling after summer's use. The wind, constant dragging and
hardening of the ag-lime surface all contribute to a washboard affect over time
that needs to be leveled on occasion. -
4. Sprinkling problems at City Hall and Silver View Park have been detected and
taken care of.
5. SPECIAL THANKS TO WALLY AND LARRY who worked on the storm water
sewer drainage pipe at Greenfield Park. We have had a constant problem with
washouts at the location at the end of the walkway easement behind the
baseball field. During rains the torrents of water wash out that area on a
regular basis. We were thinking that perhaps we would have to build a drain
field at some time - expensive and big project. However, Larry and Wally went
into the pipe (about 200 feet of close quarters) and detected that it was full of
tree roots. They cut the roots,(about 200 lbs.) and pulled them out. The pipe
is now open and hopefully this will solve our washout problem. Thanks Wally
and Larry!
6. Wednesday afternoon we had a frustrating occurrence. A youth baseball coach
was using Silver View 2 field for practice in the afternoon. The boys were
hitting baseballs into the backstop fence from the outside bowing the fencing,
dislodging it from the buried base rail and literally disforming the backstop. In
addition, the grass area behind the backstop was worn through to bare dirt in
the areas that the players were hitting - only 3-4 feet from the backstop fence!
Both Steve and Jeff asked the coach not to do this numerous times. The coach
was very belligerent and continued to conduct the practice in this manner.
Steve called me on the phone and Mary and I met them at the field. The
damage has been documented with photographs. I asked him to discontinue
this abuse to the backstop that not only did it damage the fence, but also gave
