attraction and retention of jobs. Workers° Compensation is a very complicated
issue and the committee will probably make a broiler plate recommendation that
the cost needs to become more competitive without losing the benefits of the
workers compensation system.
• I also attended the first meeting of the Ramsey County Strategic Planning
session for economic development. The committee will meet three times to
develop a vision statement and five critical issues.
• I attended the Suburban Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting at Perkins.
The big talk that day was the change of Mounds View's sign and yes we were
served food in a timely manner.
• I attended the North Metro Business Retention and Development monthly work
group meeting made up of the economic development directors of each
participating city. It is a great forum to exchange ideas and learn what issues
are affecting other surrounding cities. Mounds View was included in some of
the summary data but with only a handful of companies so it was not effective.
Next month's data should be more meaningful.
Local Company Meetings
1 . Liberty Check - very happy being in Mounds View. The location and exposure
is great for their corporate headquarters. They have expanded across the
street with a new division and may expand that facility further. They
possibly would like to put a second story on their building. I talked to Paul
and sent them the zoning requirements for height of buildings.
2. Garment Graphics - good meeting with Neil Hamlin. They are at capacity in
their location and will be expanding in the next two years out of Mounds
View due to site restrictions and Ramsey County taxes. They need 12-16
acres which is not available anywhere in Mounds View. They are seriously
looking in Blaine. Neil was very complimentary on the Police Department's
services and expressed dissatisfaction with the franchise fee process but
overall expressed satisfied being in Mounds View.
3. Best Steak House - generally very happy with his business in Mounds View.
Would be interested in looking into a liquor license but feels it is too costly.
4. Minnesota Fabrics - not too pleased with Ed Paster. Has been requesting that
they change their entry sign for two years. She feels it is out of date.
Would like more support from the local schools for buying within the
community.
5. Simons Sport Shop - would like to see more commercial development on
highway 10 and more stop lights. Feels the City is too restrictive on
businesses.
6. Midway Industrial Supply - in Mounds View since 1978. They have room to
expand if needed. Was complementary on the City services especially the
police dept. Their only concern was the intersection of Hwy 8 and 10.
