Spring Lake Park Fire Department
Benefit Information
We are a paid on call fire department. You receive hourly pay for time put in at weekly drill
sessions, certain custom training, and all fire calls. Pay rates vary depending on your rank, at the
present time the range is from $8.30 to $12.50 per hour. Much of the time you put in will be on a
volunteer basis, such as parades, public relation events, and committee work.
A uniform-is issuedafterone year of service and satisfactory completion of your probationary
period. There is a multitude of educational and training opportunities available to you through
membership in our fire department and the fire service as a whole. Discounts at local merchants
and restaurants are available to active members. A complete physical worth over$500.00 is paid
for by the fire department in your first year and on a regular set schedule thereafter.
The Fire Department carries Workers Compensation Insurance on all employees. Should you be
injured in any way while performing fire department duties such as maintenance, suppression,
clean up or public fire education, the insurance coverage will pay the following bills: all medical
bills associated with the injury and lost wages from your full time job if you are out for more than
one week. There is a maximum amount that will be paid and that is based on your average
weekly gross wage. The upper maximum is presently$508.20 per week. If you are out for more
than one week then the initial week is also picked up.
The Relief Association has several benefits. The one most people think about is the pension. At
the present time we are paying $20.00 per month per year of service or$400.00 per month for a
20 year veteran. State law requires you to be 50 years of age to be eligible to collect. The laws
also limit you to a maximum of 30 years of eligible service with regards to your pension. If you
should die, your wife (you must be legally married)will receive 75% of your pension until her
death. If you should both die and you have children under the age of 18, they would receive 75%
of your pension until the youngest one turns 18. All pension increases have been retroactive
meaning when we increase the monthly benefit amount all individuals currently receiving the
pension also receive the increase.
If you suffer a non fire service connected injury that makes it impossible for you to serve on the
fire department, we offer a prorated pension if you have at least 10 years of good time. You
cannot collect this until you turn 50 and the same rules apply for payment to your spouse and
children after you die.
If you are an active member and are killed in a non - fire related manner, we will pay your estate a
$3000.00 death benefit. This is paid regardless of the manner or location of death.
FILE:AMIRPO?DOCS/BENFI77N/MARCH 2,1994/1
