Item No: 09I
Meeting Date: July 10, 2017
Type of Business: Council Business
Administrator Review: ____

City of Mounds View Staff Report To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Brian L. Erickson, Public Works Director/City Engineer
Item Title/Subject: Resolution 8783, Approving the Design, Purchase and Installation
of a Vehicle Chassis Wash for the Public Works Facility

Introduction:
During the design phase of the Public Works Facility (City Project No. 2017-C02) it appeared
possible that the cost of the total project may exceed the budgeted amount. As a result, staff and
the designer removed some features in the building that were not essential to the operations and
maintenance staff. One of those items was the chassis wash equipment, which could be
purchased and installed outside of the construction at a later date. However, the equipment does
require some connections that should be included as part of the construction work.

Discussion:
During the project design a concern arose regarding the total project cost. As a result, several
items of work were removed from the construction bid package. One of those items was the
vehicle chassis wash. This is an item that could be added at a later date; however, it would
require some plumbing and mechanical work in order to be functional. This work would require
some additional demolition/construction in the building. Based on the low bids that came in staff
began the process of trying to add this component as part of the construction work. This would
allow the new building to have the chassis wash once it is occupied.

After the contract was awarded, staff along with Oertel began the process for getting the cost and
installation details for the chassis wash. The bulk of this cost is from the equipment manufacturer;
however, there is some additional cost from Ebert’s plumbing, electrical, and concrete
subcontractors. In addition, some design and review by the architect is required for plumbing and
electrical connections. The following table shows the total cost for adding the chassis wash to
the facility.

Work Item Original Cost
Interclean Chassis Wash 65,277.00$
Plumbing 1,841.00$
Electrical 1,150.00$
Concrete 800.00$
Construction Subtotal 69,068.00$
Bond Cost (2%)1,381.36$
Subtotal 70,449.36$
Overhead & Profit (5%)3,522.47$
TOTAL CONSTRUCTION 73,971.83$
Additional Design Fee 2,892.50$
TOTAL COST 76,864.33$
PW Facility Chassis Wash Installation
