Item No: 9C Type of Business: Consent Agenda Meeting Date: September 26, 2005 Administrator Review: _____ City of Mounds View Staff Report To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Mike Sommer, Police Chief Item Title/Subject: Resolution 6625 Authorizing the Purchase of 800MHz Portable Radios for the Police Department Date of Report: September 26, 2005 Background In anticipation of transitioning to an 800MHz public safety radio system, all police and fire agencies in the Ramsey County have placed orders for both portable and mobile 800MHz radios. These orders are all administered by Ramsey County. The portable radios order for Ramsey County police and fire departments have been purchased and are currently warehoused. The Police Department has budgeted $13,440 for the purchase of portable 800MHz radios for 2005. The Police Department applied for and was awarded a grant from the Minnesota Department of public safety office of Justice programs in the amount of $12,500, which is dedicated solely for the portable radio purchase. In order to utilize this grant the funds must be expended by the city by September 30, 2005. The total cost for the portable radios for the Police Department it is $67,519.60. Of the total costs, Ramsey County, through federal grants, will cover $51,870.00 and the city of Mounds View is liable for $15,649.60 of the cost. The portable radios will be purchased by utilizing the $12,500 grant funds the police department received and $3,149.60 from the police budget funds dedicated for this purchase in the 2005 budget. Recommendation Staff recommends council approve the purchase of the 800MHz portable radios from Ramsey County funded by an expenditure of $3,149.60 from the Police Department budget, and the $12,500 grant from the Minnesota Department of public safety. ___________________________ Mike Sommer Police Chief
