REPORTS 8 <br /> 9 <br />A. Reports of Mayor and Council 10 <br /> 11 <br />Council Member Gunn stated that the Festival of Parks Golf Tournament is scheduled for August 12 <br />20, 2005 and the Festival of Parks is scheduled to take place on August 21, 2005. She that they 13 <br />are planning a Battle of the Bands after the parade, in the park, noting that any teens with a local 14 <br />band that are interested in competing should contact her or Jim Schwalbe. She stated that the 15 <br />festival would also include a Flea Market and Fireworks. She stated that the parade is scheduled 16 <br />to begin at 3:00 p.m. adding that the parade route would begin and end at the Business Park and 17 <br />provided an overview of the route. 18 <br /> 19 <br />Council Member Thomas stated that this is a follow-up to the discussion Council had with 20 <br />regards to some of the difficulties with the fireworks ordinance. She stated that she had some 21 <br />conversations with the Legislative Author noting that even though he is firmly supportive that 22 <br />fireworks should be purchasable year round, it was never his intent to prohibit Cities from being 23 <br />able to restrict it to permit structures. She stated that they are under discussion and would be in 24 <br />contact with Jim to determine what should be done legislatively to ensure that Cities have full 25 <br />authority and flexibility to do what they need to at the legislative level. 26 <br /> 27 <br />Mayor Marty stated that he received a call from Dorothy Trinka who is a member of the 28 <br />Supporters of De La Renaissance of Haiti. He explained that she wanted to set up a meeting with 29 <br />him and the City Administrator. He stated that he and Director Ericson met with them today 30 <br />adding that they have been invited to attend the Council Work Session on Monday, August 1, 31 <br />2005 to discuss facts of Haiti with the Council. He stated that over half of the population is 32 <br />unemployed and they are trying to solicit for assistance and donations. He stated that they are 33 <br />also putting on a Haitian Buffet on Saturday, August 27th at the Fairview Park Recreation Center, 34 <br />609 29th Avenue North, Minneapolis from Noon to 6:00 p.m. He stated that for five years and 35 <br />under it would be free; 6-12 years would be $5.00 and 13 years and older would be $10.00. He 36 <br />stated that the City does not have a budget for benevolent contributions noting that the City could 37 <br />volunteer to help with the buffet. He indicated that the City could also help by donating items 38 <br />such as typewriters, hospital equipment, soap, cleaning supplies, medicine, eye glasses, 39 <br />mattresses, furniture, motorcycles, water pumps, computers, food and clothing. He stated that 40 <br />they are having a yard sale, August 12-13, 2005 noting that he wanted to give the Council a 41 <br />heads up that they would be present at the Work Session for a brief presentation. 42 <br /> 43
