Resolution 6079, a Resolution Authorizing Staff to Advertise for the Public 1 Works Maintenance Worker Position in the Streets Division. 2 3 Public Works Director Lee indicated that in light of budget restrictions Staff reviewed whether or 4 not it was necessary to fill the position vacated or if another member of the department could 5 take on the responsibilities and determined that the department is running lean already and it is 6 not possible to provide the service to the residents without hiring for this position. 7 8 Council Member Stigney indicated that he would like Staff to do further investigation into 9 whether it is really necessary to hire for this position. He then suggested looking into seasonal 10 workers or a part time position. 11 12 MOTION/SECOND: Stigney/Gunn. To Postpone Action on Resolution 6079 Until the Budget 13 is Set. 14 15 Public Works Director Lee indicated that he looked at ways of absorbing the duties of the 16 position within the department but they are already short staffed due to the requirements of the 17 surface water management plan and the need to pull people off of other responsibilities to 18 complete those. He then said that he has looked at juggling people and assigning more tasks but 19 it is not possible at this time. 20 21 Mayor Linke indicated that all public works employees are doing double duty and there is not 22 time to assign the tasks of another employee to them. He then said that he would have an issue 23 with seasonal employees because there is seasonal work in the summer and the winter. 24 25 Council Member Stigney indicated he would like to consider a part time position. He then said 26 that there is a full time person at the Community Center that he feels could be part time. He also 27 suggested the City look into contracting out the work and commented that the City is faced with 28 LGA cuts and needs to closely consider its costs. 29 30 Public Works Director Lee indicated that he has not looked at contracting out the work and does 31 not know of any city that does that. He then said that if the position is not filled the City would 32 have no choice but to contract out the work. 33 34 Ayes – 1(Stigney) Nays – 4 Motion failed. 35 36 MOTION/SECOND: Quick/Marty. To Waive the Reading and Approve Resolution 6079, a 37 Resolution Authorizing Staff to Advertise for the Public Works Maintenance Worker Position in 38 the Streets Division. 39 40 Ayes – 4 Nays – 1(Stigney) Motion carried. 41 42
