Mounds View City Council Page 12
Regular Meeting November 29, 1994
Mr. Brasaemle, 5127 Long Lake Road, said that he is employed
by the Minnesota Department of Environmental Assistance and is
here to speak as a resident of Mounds View. He strongly
opposed any movement to repeal the EQC. He felt the need for
members had not been well publicized and stated that he would
be willing to serve if the Commission continues. He cited the
wetland issue discussed earlier in the meeting as an area that
would fall within the duties of the EQC.
(The Meeting was informally recessed due to a false fire alarm. )
Mr. Brasaemle went on to explain that the Planning Commission
considered issues based on Ordinances rather than the
environment. He felt that be removing the EQC, the Council
would be going against the constituency of Mounds View, and
suggested that an aggressive ad campaign be done to recruit
members. More residents would be made aware of the EQC if it
were given a higher profile.
Ruth White, 2917 County Road I, commented that she perceived
this action as being politically motivated. She stated that,
although she had no background concerning this, she felt it
• was vindictive because two members of the Commission were
candidates for the City Council and this action was started
immediately following election.
Linke said that was not what had precipitated this action.
Councilmember Trude mentioned that the Council should
advertise for members for the EQC and provide the same amount
of support for this Commission that the Council provides to
the other Commissions. She felt the hiring of a Recycling
Intern would help add the support services this Commission
needs. A direct work plan should be provided from the Council
---so that—the activities of the Commission are ones__that__the_
Council wants.
Trude felt that often her viewpoints regarding environmental
issues were not shared by the other members of the Council.
She felt the EQC was necessary to help make the City a place
that our children and grandchildren will be proud to inherit.
The issues to be considered by the EQC should be directed from
the Council so there are no misunderstandings, and Trude felt
the Council should accept blame for the problems of the EQC.
Trude suggested that the EQC suspend meetings until there are
seven members and that a strong effort to recruit members
should be made. She commented that the work plan of the EQC
411 should begin at the Council level and be directed to the
Commission, with results being returned to the Council.
