committed leaders, solidly coordinated, well qualified, well -
liked by the community, well organized, and a produbtive summer
activity for the neighborhood children. Finally, the leaders
repeatedly addressed the commitment that the City of Mounds View
has towards the Summer Playcenter Program. one leader said
that "the community support and strong city backing is an
important and positive dimension to the program." Without
this support, the summer program would not be successful. As
the supervisor of the Mounds View Summer Playcenter Program,
I am especially pleased with these positive comments and
reactions to the Playcenter Program at Mounds View.
Summer activites at each park centered around arts and
crafts, games, sports, puppetry, songs, and excursions. To
prepare for these activities, the leaders had a two day orien-
tation at City Hall. In past years, the summer playground
leaders have also had an additional orientation day with the
Minneapolis Parks Department. Through many of the evaluations,
the leaders asked for an additional preparation day to get more
ideas for programming. The Mounds View leaders do realize that
the Minneapolis Parks Department is no longer running an orien-
tation/idea session and suggested that they meet with the New
Brighton Park and Recreation staff and/or the Shoreview Park
and Recreation staff to exchange ideas and interests. I agree
with this very much; another day of preparation would be a
great help for the leaders and for myself. I particularly like
the idea of meeting with another park and recreation department
to get ideas on other summer playground programs.
The playground activities themselves were quite successful
on both the "Butterflies are Free" program and the "Playcenter"
-2-
