Commission members discussed these recommendations. It was generally stated that these cate-
gories provide appropriate definitions for the current mapping program but should not be consid-
ered standards for future construction. Mr. Frank moved, seconded by Ms. Anderson, that the
Commission support these definitions as useful for categorizing the bikeways presently
available. Motion carried.
Consideration of a Proposal to Establish a Mountain Bike Area(s) Within the Ramsey
County Parks and Open Space System
Mr. Mack reported that he and Mr. Holmberg attended a meeting on February 16, 1994, of the St.
Paul Bicycle Advisory Board on mountain biking. Mr. Joe Felt, Minnesota Mountain Biking
Resource Group, suggested that a mountain bike trail be developed at Battle Creek Regional
Park. Mr. Mack stated that an attempt should be made to determine if this activity is compatible at
Battle Creek Regional Park before authorizing mountain bike use. Commission members agreed
LV -1 ll-- n_-_- /'_ should
_I..J- mountain
biking
trails
_ 1_ •1_: aL_
that the Ramsey County system should include mountain biking trails at some location within the
County. Mr. Mack has requested information from operators of mountain biking trails in the
metropolitan area. Mr. Frank moved, seconded by Mr. Botzek, that Battle Creek Regional
Park (Winthrop site) should be evaluated as a possible location for mountain biking. Fur-
ther, other sites should be considered if Battle Creek Regional Park is not found to be suit-
able. Motion carried:
Continued Discussion Reqardinq Corporate Partnership Initiatives
Chairman Nolan circulated a letter he received from Mr. David Ginkel, 3M, indicating that the work
and business climate are not right at this time to institute new volunteer programs but he is inter-
ested in the possibility of creating a partnership with the Ramsey County Parks and Recreation
Department sometime in the future. Mr. Botzek will share this letter with Mr. Darril Wegscheid.
Chairman Nolan suggested that Mr. Botzek ask Mr. Wegscheid how this partnership program
could receive higher priority consideration in the future.
Director's Report
Mr. Mack reported that the Shoreview City Council approved the Snail Lake Regional Park Devel-
opment Plan on February 22, 1994. The plan is being finalized to reflect actions taken by the City
Council. Mr. Botzek said Ramsey County staff did an excellent job throughout the plan review
process
Mr. Mack indicated that he had a follow-up conversation with Mr. Bernie Bullert, General Manager,
St. Paul Water Utility, regarding the Sucker/Vadnais Lakes area. They agreed that a letter of un-
derstanding on the concept of joint use needs to be presented to their respective boards. A recre-
ational concept plan would then be presented to the community at large.
The city of Arden Hills is hosting a meeting on March 17, 1994, at the Twin Cities Army Ammuni-
tions Plant.
